This vintage Platinum pocket fountain pen is a classic example of the compact Japanese pens that became popular during the 1960s and 1970s.

Designed to be exceptionally compact when capped yet comfortable for full-size writing when posted, the pen features a long cap paired with a shortened barrel. Its silver-tone metal exterior is decorated with a distinctive black stripe pattern, giving the pen a refined monochrome appearance.

The cap band is prominently engraved PLATINUM, with subtle decorative detailing completing the period design.

The pen is fitted with an 18K white-gold Fine nib, marked 18K WG. The white-gold nib complements the silver and black finish particularly well and offers the precise writing character associated with vintage Japanese Fine nibs.

It uses Platinum's cartridge filling system.

Condition

This example is in good vintage condition.

The pen has been carefully inspected, cleaned and tested. The black stripe pattern remains well defined and the silver-tone finish retains a good lustre.

There are light surface marks and signs of previous use consistent with its age. Some marks are visible on the nib under close magnification but do not affect its function.

Japanese pocket fountain pens are particularly clever pieces of design: small enough to carry easily when capped, but extending into a comfortably proportioned writing instrument once the long cap is posted onto the short barrel.

This example is particularly attractive for its black stripe finish and 18K white-gold nib, creating an understated monochrome combination typical of Japanese design from the period.
