Elevating this natural canvas is the meticulous addition of Maki-e Urushi artwork, expertly hand-applied by a master craftsman using traditional natural Urushi lacquers. The multi-layered design showcases incredible depth, capturing classic Japanese motifs that catch the light beautifully against the organic backdrop of the wood grain. Designed with a rich black resin grip section for balanced long-session comfort, the pen is completed by elegant, polished gold-plated trim that perfectly echoes the metallic brilliance of the Maki-e work.

Our example is incredibly rare and I have never seen another like it. These early Precious Wood pens were created as very limited editions at the very top of the market. I wrote to Sailor for more information on this pen and they advised it would have been issued in the 1980s in a series of around 10 pens, and would have sold then for 100,000 Yen. They described it as a Kaga Makie decoration, so that’s what I’ll call it too. Very high quality with a satisfying click when capped, this pen has only ever been dipped and is in excellent condition.
