The vintage Conklin Crescent lever-filler in lizardskin celluloid is an extraordinary cross-era rarity from one of America’s most innovative historic penmakers. While the “Crescent” name is traditionally synonymous with Conklin’s foundational 1898 crescent-shaped filling mechanism, this particular 1940s variation cleverly retains the iconic branding while utilizing a streamlined, highly reliable side-mounted lever-filling system.
The defining feature of this exquisite writing instrument is its mesmerizing lizardskin celluloid barrel and cap. The material features an intricate, multi-dimensional matrix of cross-hatched metallic greys and pearlescent silvers that brilliantly mimics natural reptilian scales. This pattern catches the light beautifully, offering immense visual depth that stands out dramatically from standard marbled or striped celluloids of the era.
Fitted with a solid 14-karat gold factory nib, the pen provides a smooth, responsive writing experience with excellent ink flow. Accented by classic gold-plated trim, including dual cap bands and a robust pocket clip, this unique variant is a prized holy grail for collectors seeking the perfect intersection of Conklin’s iconic heritage and their rarest aesthetic designs.
Our pen is in very nice condition, given there are not many of these pens around and those which are left in generally in poor condition due to this actually being a ‘budget’ model at the time and having very thin plating. there is some light brassing on the clip and lower cap ring but otherwise this pen is superb. It is fitted with an original ‘warranted’ 14K nib (being a budget model most were not fitted with Conklin branded nibs), which is very smooth and semi flex, and is cut with a really nice cursive italic grind. The nib is a bit dented towards the base, but performs great and I have chosen not to replace it as it is correct for the pen.
