DREAM PEN TSUNO FOUNTAIN PEN
For centuries, the Vietnamese people have believed that it is more respectful to animals to maximize and utilize every part. Just like how the Vikings would use whale blubber for soap and candles, the Vietnamese would take something as simple as the horn of a cow, and transform it into a work of art. This takes the concept of "zero waste" to an altogether new level - elevating what would normally be thrown away into something desirable.
We first encountered an example of this artwork at a Traditional Arts exhibition in Vietnam, and we were inspired by the artisans and their commitment to using only the most natural of materials for their art. When we discovered that their artform was in danger of being forgotten in the modern day, we knew that it was fate for us to collaborate in creating a new collection of fountain pens crafted from genuine bull horn.
Akari-Hikage
Akari (Light) and Hikage (Shadow) are the first editions of the Tsuno collection crafted using bull horn.
Together, Akari and Hikage embody the delicate balance of light and shadow--a core of traditional Japanese beauty. Where akari brings life and warmth, hikage brings calm and depth. In their interplay, we find the essence of atmosphere, emotion, and time itself.
Akari (Light) is the first edition of the Tsuno collection crafted using bullhorn.
A gentle light that glows softly in the quiet.
Akari is the warmth of a paper lantern, the flicker of a candle in a darkened room, or the golden hue of sunlight filtering through shoji screens. It symbolizes hope, comfort, and clarity--a guiding presence in uncertain times. In Japanese tradition, akari evokes feelings of nostalgia, peace, and emotional warmth. It is light not just seen, but felt.
Hikage (Shadow) is the second edition of the Tsuno collection crafted using bullhorn.
The quiet shade where stillness resides.
Hikage represents the hidden, the subtle, the introspective. It is the space beneath the eaves, the cool shadow under trees in summer, or the subdued presence of a figure standing just out of the light. In Japanese aesthetics, hikage is not darkness, but a soft retreat, a reminder of beauty found in quiet and concealment. It symbolizes humility, reflection, and the grace of things left unsaid.
Biodegradable and Ethically Sourced
The material, bull horn, is ethically sourced, and unlike items made from synthetic materials such as plastic, the crafting process of a pen with bull horn as the base material does not emit harmful or toxic chemicals. Furthermore, as bull horn is formed from keratin, it is 100% biodegradable, and it will not be damaging to the environment in the unlikely event that the item must be disposed.
