For your consideration is a beautiful vintage De La Rue lever-filling fountain pen, likely manufactured approximately circa 1920s. This is a classic black chased hard rubber pen with a wonderfully preserved chased pattern, excellent proportions, and an unusually expressive soft broad stub nib.
Cross stroke is 0.35 mm, on flex and stroke is 0.8 mm, flexed down stroke is a massive 2.5 mm. Resulting line variation is over 7x. Pen requires minimal pressure to spread times, approximately 150 g of force, approaching, if not entering wet noodle territory. This is a fantastic nib.
The pen measures approximately 133 mm capped and about 10 mm across the barrel. It is a comfortable full-size vintage pen, with a long, elegant shape and excellent balance in the hand.
The real star of this pen is the nib. It is an incredibly soft, broad, stubby De La Rue nib with remarkable character. It writes with a natural broad/stub feel under normal pressure and opens dramatically under flex. Measured line variation is approximately 0.35 mm hairline, 0.8 mm normal downstroke, and 2.5+ mm under flex, placing it roughly in the F/B to 7B expressive range depending on pressure and writing angle. Flex pressure is approximately 156 g, making this a very soft and responsive nib. It is wet, expressive, and beautifully suited for shaded writing, italic-flavored everyday script, and dramatic vintage flex work.
The black chased hard rubber is also exceptional. The chasing is crisp, attractive, and almost mint in appearance, with deep visual texture and strong tactile feel. The ebonite has been carefully restored in color and surface feel, avoiding the dry, faded look that many black hard rubber pens acquire over time. It presents beautifully: deep black, crisp, and very satisfying in the hand. If you haven’t felt properly restored ebonite, this is an excellent opportunity. The material does not feel brittle but silky, and somehow soft and hard at the same time. A testament to old world, craftsmanship, premium materials, and meticulous restoration.
The pen has been restored and is writing well, with a new ink sac installed. The lever filler operates properly. As with any antique writing instrument, there may be minor age-appropriate handling wear, but overall this is a particularly handsome example, with the two standout features being the excellent black chased hard rubber and the exceptionally soft broad stub flex nib.
Condition notes: restored; new sac installed; black chased hard rubber carefully restored in color and tactile feel; crisp chasing; very soft broad stub De La Rue nib; approximately 0.35 / 0.8 / 2.5+ mm line variation; approximately 156 g flex pressure; normal vintage wear. Please review the photos carefully, as they form part of the description.
A striking and unusually expressive De La Rue lever filler — not merely a collectible early pen, but a genuinely exciting writer with a soft, broad, dramatic nib and beautifully preserved chased hard rubber.
