PILOT CUSTOM 745: BACKGROUND, HISTORY & BRAND HERITAGE
The Pilot Custom 745 is part of Pilot’s esteemed Custom series, a line that began in the 1970s with the goal of offering high-quality, professional-grade fountain pens crafted for serious writers. The 745 emerged as a refinement within this lineage, positioned between the lighter 742 and the larger 743, giving writers a perfectly balanced mid-sized pen equipped with Pilot’s respected #10 nib. It represents the era when Pilot shifted toward more modern luxury materials and precision machining while still preserving the traditional craftsmanship rooted in Japanese pen-making.
Although not as old as the earliest Custom models, the 745 carries forward the series’ foundational philosophy: a pen built for writing performance above all else. Its sterling silver variants, ebonite feeds, and beautifully tuned gold nibs helped establish the Custom series as one of the most reliable and consistent premium pen families in the world. For many collectors, the 745 is one of the most comfortably proportioned pens Pilot has ever produced—large enough for extended writing, yet never cumbersome.
Today, the Custom 745 remains appreciated for its understated elegance, flawless construction, and its connection to Pilot’s long tradition of making pens for professionals, academics, and everyday writers who demand quality that lasts for decades.
The Pilot Custom 745’s gold pinstripe design is one of its most distinctive aesthetic features, giving the pen a refined presence that reflects Pilot’s traditional sense of luxury. Instead of opting for a plain resin body, Pilot adorns the 745 with thin, precisely applied gold stripes running the length of the barrel and cap. These pinstripes catch the light subtly, creating an elegant shimmer without being overly bold, perfectly matching the Custom series’ philosophy of quiet sophistication.
The pattern is inspired by classic Japanese business aesthetics—clean lines, balance, and understated formality. The stripes enhance the pen’s visual depth and accentuate its shape, making the pen feel sleek yet timeless. Because each stripe is applied with careful alignment and uniformity, the craftsmanship becomes immediately apparent when the pen is rotated in hand.
PILOT'S LARGE #10 NIB
The Pilot Custom 745 is fitted with an 18K gold #10 Fine nib, a beautifully engineered writing tool that showcases Pilot’s mastery of nib craftsmanship. The #10 size offers an ideal balance between the compact #5 nibs and the larger #15 nibs, giving the writer a smooth, controlled, and highly responsive feel without excess softness. Made from solid 18K gold, the nib provides a gentle natural spring, offering just enough cushioning on the page to make writing feel fluid and effortless.
In Fine size, the nib produces a clean, precise line that is characteristic of Japanese fine nibs—ideal for detailed writing, note-taking, planners, and anyone who prefers accuracy without sacrificing smoothness. Pilot’s tuning is renowned for consistency, and the #10 Fine nib on the 745 glides with ease, maintaining a steady ink flow while delivering the subtle feedback that many writers appreciate for control and clarity.
The nib’s design reflects Pilot’s long tradition of Japanese craftsmanship, with elegant engravings and a polished gold finish that complements the pen’s refined aesthetic. Collectors value the #10 18K nib for its performance, reliability, and the way it perfectly matches the proportions of the Custom 745, making it a pen that truly shines in everyday use.
