Up for online sale is a true holy grail for vintage writing instrument connoisseurs: a museum-grade Onoto "The Pen" Model 5600 in the legendary Transparent Amber Mesh (Amber Hatch) finish. Manufactured in London by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd. just before WWII, this model represents the absolute zenith of British pen design and optical engineering.
This incredible set comes complete with its authentic, period-correct original Onoto presentation box
The 1940 Bunhill Row Factory Blitz: In December 1940, during the height of WWII, De La Rue's historic London factory at Bunhill Row was entirely destroyed by Luftwaffe incendiary bombs. The specialized machinery and the remaining stocks of this highly complex laminated Amber Mesh celluloid were completely lost to history. Production ceased instantly, making surviving pre-war examples incredibly scarce.
The Complete "Unfrankensteined" Survivor Set: Finding a 5600 with its factory-matching box, immaculate imprints, and its correct original components completely intact is an extreme rarity on the modern estate market.
Barrel & Cap Cosmetics: Exceptional. The complex Wavy Line cap chasing and the unique diamond-hatch pattern along the cap lip are remarkably crisp. The barrel retains a mirror-like factory gloss
Factory Imprints: Crisp, deep, and fully legible. The barrel proudly displays the full historic stamp: "ONOTO THE PEN / DE LA RUE & CO LTD LONDON / BRIT. PAT. NO 497169"
Trim: The iconic gold-plated streamlined clip featuring the De La Rue sun/star logo is tight and bright, showing only minor, honest vintage micro-patina
Nib & Feed: Equipped with its original 14K Gold De La Rue Onoto London Nib with a heart-shaped breather hole . It features smooth, wet, and slightly springy fine/medium writing characteristics, perfectly paired with its original grooved ebonite feed
Mechanism: Fully restored . The high-capacity plunger-filler vacuum mechanism has been completely overhauled with fresh, modern impervious seals.
