Unlike the large-scale manufacturers that came to dominate the industry, Ohashido remained a small family-run workshop, producing fountain pens largely by hand for more than a century. Three generations of the Uehara family carried on the tradition, earning the brand a devoted following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciated craftsmanship over mass production. What makes Ohashido unique is its dedication to traditional pen-making methods. Many pens were crafted from ebonite and finished with urushi lacquer, materials that had largely disappeared from mainstream production. Rather than focusing on large production numbers, each pen was carefully shaped, finished, and adjusted by hand, giving every piece its own character and individuality.Ohashido pens became especially known for their distinctive designs, handcrafted construction, and exceptional writing performance. Many models featured custom-ground gold nibs and meticulous finishing that reflected decades of accumulated craftsmanship. Because production remained extremely limited and sales were often conducted directly through the workshop or pen shows, Ohashido pens were rarely seen outside Japan and developed a reputation as hidden treasures among fountain pen enthusiasts. The brand's reputation was built not on advertising or mass-market presence, but on personal relationships between the craftsman and the writer. Owners often returned their pens directly to the workshop for adjustments and servicing, continuing a tradition that connected maker and customer in a way rarely seen in modern manufacturing.Ohashido Black UrushiThe Ohashido Black Urushi is one of the purest expressions of the workshop's philosophy--focusing on craftsmanship, materials, and writing performance rather than elaborate decoration. Handcrafted in Sendai, Japan, these pens were typically made from ebonite and finished with multiple layers of natural black urushi lacquer, creating a deep, mirror-like surface that reveals its beauty through simplicity rather than ornamentation. Many examples were produced during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s in extremely limited numbers by the Uehara family workshop.Unlike painted or plated finishes, urushi possesses a remarkable depth that changes subtly under different lighting conditions. The glossy black surface appears almost liquid, reflecting light with a warmth and richness that ordinary resin cannot replicate. The finish is built up through numerous layers of lacquer applied and polished by hand, a process that requires considerable time and skill. The pen's understated appearance is intentional. Rather than drawing attention through bright colors or decorative patterns, the Black Urushi model emphasizes the natural beauty of urushi lacquer and the craftsmanship behind its creation. Combined with the warmth of the ebonite body, the result is a pen that feels remarkably comfortable and organic in hand. What makes these pens especially desirable today is their rarity. Ohashido remained a small family-run workshop throughout its history, producing pens in quantities far below those of major manufacturers. Each pen was individually finished and often tuned by hand, giving every example its own character. Collectors frequently regard Ohashido's black urushi models as some of the finest examples of traditional Japanese artisan pen making.J.s.u ohashido x sailor 14K NibJ.S.U Ohashido's ebonite fountain pens are known for their high-quality nibs, which provide a smooth and enjoyable writing experience. The brand has collaborated with Sailor, a well-respected Japanese pen company, to produce nibs that are durable, consistent, and well-balanced.The writing experience with a J.S.U Ohashido x Sailor fountain pen is said to be very consistent, with a subtle degree of scratchiness due to Sailor's most famous feature which is the Nib's Natural paper feedback across the paper. The nib is flexible enough to provide some line variation, but not so much that it becomes difficult to control. The pen's balanced weight and comfortable grip allow for hours of writing without hand fatigue, and the ink flow is reliable and consistent, so there are no skipping or blobby lines. Many Fountain pen users prefer a butter-smooth writing experience however die-hard Sailor nibs fans found their "paper-feedback" features to be more nostalgic than a butter-smooth writing nib. It allows the writer to connect with the paper and their ideas more naturallyNib SizeMMaterial14K GoldConditionAGood ConditionThe pen is in beautiful condition, there are hairline scratches on the clip but no damage such as dents or cracks found on the body of the pen.The Nib is in EXCELLENT Condition, absolutely shiny with almost no scratches that are visibleThe pen is obtained from a second-hand collectors' market and the pen filler mechanism has been cleaned and the nib has been tested to assess any scratchiness or ink leakage.
